Their Bun, Our Oven: Memoirs Of A Surrogate

Would you risk your life to follow your dreams? I did. Only I didn't know it at the time. For years, I longed to be a surrogate. I offered for friends struggling with fertility, even before I had children of my own. My heart has always hurt for women who yearned for a family that their body wouldn't give them. After completing our family, my desire to surrogate remained as strong as ever, if not stronger. So my husband and I embarked on the journey of finding an agency and getting matched with hopeful parents. The process went quickly and perfectly, matching us with an amazing couple from Wyoming.

The next few months went almost just as perfectly, a few speed bumps along the way, but as things progressed, so did the bumps. Medical complications caused heartbreaking setbacks, health concerns for the baby and myself, and ultimately put both of our lives in danger.

That cold December night, the baby and I bleeding out on the family room floor, praying for the ambulance to come and get us to the hospital before the baby or I slipped away. By the grace of God, we both made it out alive that night. Despite the lows along the way and trauma of that night, seeing my new friend hold her newborn baby put everything into perspective. My family and I helped create life, create a family. And in a world with so much hurting, that is a beautiful thing that I could never regret.
